Residents moved after blast blows extension apart

TEN homes were evacuated after a suspected gas explosion blew apart a house extension and left two people hurt.

Firefighters were called to the incident in Brook Row at Oakworth, Keighley, on Saturday night.

The blast destroyed the extension. Two people were taken to hospital, one with burns to the hands and face and the other suffering from the effects of breathing smoke.

Gas engineers and a fire crew remained at the scene yesterday. The cause of the explosion is being investigated.

A spokesman for the fire service said an extension at the rear of the property was “blown apart” and there had been some movement of the central wall within the house.
