Residents moved from homes as tyres burn

Homes were evacuated and numerous roads were closed because of a large tyre fire in Mexborough, South Yorkshire, yesterday.

About 60 firefighters were at the scene in White Lea Grove at the height of the blaze yesterday morning, trying to prevent the fire spreading from the recycling yard to nearby buildings. Residents living in Frederick Street and Cawood Street were moved out to the nearby Conisbrough Social Education Centre.

Doncaster Council's director of neighbourhoods and communities, Jane Miller, yesterday advised people in Mexborough to keep their doors and windows closed, and also stay indoors because of the large amount of smoke in the area.
