Residents offered chance to recycle waste cooking oil

ENVIRONMENTALLY minded residents in Kirklees can add a novel material to their weekly recycling – cooking oil.

Renewable energy provider Living Fuels has supplied used cooking oil collection facilities at three household waste recycling, Emerald Street in Huddersfield, Weaving Lane in Dewsbury and Nab Lane in Birstall.

All cooking oil collected at the sites is refined into a biofuel and used to create green electricity in purpose-made generators across the UK.

The oil is collected by Living Fuels vehicles converted to run on the same biofuel.

Daniel Gillert, commercial manager for Living Fuels, said: "Many people don't realise that thousands of tons of used cooking oil are poured down the drain each year, costing UK rate payers around 15m to clean up.

"By recycling your used cooking oil, you're not only helping to solve this problem but also making use of what was previously a waste material."

The oil tanks were installed by Living Fuels in partnership with Kirklees Council and resource management company Sita, with the aim of further reducing the amount of waste going into landfill.

Mr Gillert added: "Once refined, the biofuel, named LF100, has huge potential – just one litre generates enough clean electricity to make 240 cups of tea, while one tonne can provide enough to power the average home for an entire year.

"Using this process to create electricity vastly reduces carbon emissions, meaning that everyone can play a part in building Britain's renewable energy future."

The Cabinet member for regeneration, environment and transport at Kirklees Council, David Sheard, said "We are committed to making Kirklees a cleaner, greener place for people to live, work and visit.

"These facilities now give our residents more choice in the types of material that can be recycled locally, whilst at the same time helping to generate energy, reducing carbon emissions and saving tax payers money."
