Residents oppose extending bar hours

RESIDENTS living close to a bar near Sheffield University have objected to plans for it to open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.

Boudica Bar in Regent Street, just off West Street, is currently permitted to open until 12.30am every night and residents of the flats above say they would not have moved in had the bar been allowed to open any later.

Previous applications to extend the opening hours of the bar, which was previously called Sharkey's, were refused by councillors in both June 2005 and January 2010 and city planners have advised that the plans are turned down once again when they go before Sheffield Council's planning committee meeting on Monday.

One resident of the seven-storey apartment block above Boudica Bar told the planning board: "Myself and my flatmates are currently studying for a primary education degree, with includes a lot of time spent on placements with very early starts.

I feel that if the opening hours were extended until the proposed time of 2am it would not only impact on my academic life but on my personal life too.

If I had known there was going to be an application for a potential extension of the opening hours then I would never have become a tenant."

Another objector said: "A club would create a completely different atmosphere for my building and neighbourhood. The opening of a club would leave me no choice but to leave my home, as I am completing a very intensive course.

"I feel that if a club was to open this would have a huge impact on my degree.

In the report set to go before Monday's meeting, city planners say that the planning application should be refused and add: "Extending the opening hours would cause significant harm to the living conditions of residents above and adjoining the premises in this otherwise relatively quiet location."
