Residents’ pleas win post reprieve

A VILLAGE post office that was set to close has been given a fresh lease of life after the owner agreed to postpone his retirement.

Residents in Mixenden, Halifax, appealed for a change of heart after their sub-postmaster announced his resignation.

Ramanlal Mistry and wife Sushila, who have been part of the community’s fabric for decades, were due to leave this month with the Royal Mail saying the post office would remain shut until a replacement could be found.

Now the couple have said they will continue until a permanent solution has been put in place.

The Royal Mail confirmed they have already received interest in the position.

Mr Mistry and his wife have worked at the post office for more than 30 years.

Councillor Barry Collins said he was delighted.

He said: “The sub-post office in Mixenden is a lifeline for many residents and closure would have hit them hard. The next nearest post offices are in Illingworth and Ovenden, a long way to travel for older people and those without cars. It’s fantastic news that Mr Mistry has postponed his retirement until we can find a more permanent arrangement.”
