Residents praised as flat is boarded up

Residents have been applauded for taking a stand after a notorious flat was finally boarded up on a Hull estate.

Hull Council took legal action after more than a dozen complaints from residents who had to put up with loud music and shouting, all-night parties and bottles and cans being thrown out of windows from the property in Gatwick House, a high-rise block of flats on the city's Bransholme estate.

Many residents attended Hull Magistrates Court where a closure order was granted as well as applications for two interim anti-social behaviour orders, barring two people from entering the building.

PC Trevor Harling, North Carr Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "This is a fantastic result. A lot of hard work goes into obtaining these closures.

"Residents in the area who have had to put up with regular anti-social behaviour at the address should be applauded for taking a stand and helping us with this application.

"The address has been a hot bed for unacceptable anti-social behaviour over the last few months and I hope this action helps those affected start to enjoy a peaceful life."

The closure order was applied for using powers introduced by the Government to close premises associated with serious and persistent antisocial behaviour. The order can last for up to three months and can be extended to six months if necessary.

When the authorities were investigating complaints they held a multi-agency drop-in session at Gatwick House to allow local residents to air their concerns.

Justine Mortimer, Hull Council's neighbourhood nuisance manager, said: "This shows that Hull City Council and partner agencies will not tolerate any form of antisocial behaviour and that we will use the powers available to tackle problems in order to protect residents and communities."
