Residents told they can keep green recycling bins after all

COUNCIL bosses in Sheffield have gone back on a decision to replace residents' green recycling bins, which are currently used for garden waste, with reusable hessian sacks.

At present, only those living in the south east of the city have a green bin. They were initially told that, when the new monthly citywide garden waste recycling service is rolled out from April next year, they would be issued with hessian sacks – as would those living in all other areas of Sheffield.

However, yesterday the leading Liberal Democrat group on Sheffield Council announced that plans had changed and those who already have a green bin can continue to use them.

Council leader Paul Scriven said: "Making sure that the whole city received a garden waste recycling service was a key priority for the Liberal Democrats on the council, therefore I'm delighted that it will roll out in April and I know many people who haven't had this service before are looking forward to it.

"However, it became clear from talking to local residents who already had a green bin that they really wanted to keep them.

"That's why we have changed our plans to ensure that green bins will stay, whilst we will still be able to roll out the new service to the rest of the city.

"We know that we don't always get things right first time, as much as we would like to. But I hope this shows that we are listening to local people and are willing to change things if they tell us something could be done better."

Sheffield Council is also currently rolling out a new recycling service for cans, glass and plastic bottles. People are being asked to put these items in the blue bins they currently use for paper, and instead recycle paper in a new blue box.
