Residents urged to give views on area's alcohol problems

PEOPLE living in an area of Leeds which has faced problems with drunken and rowdy behaviour are being urged to get involved in public discussions.

Residents in Headingley, an area popular with students, are being urged to have their say as Leeds City Council launches its latest licensing policy review.

With alcohol and refreshments available late into the night, residents have previously raised concerns about rowdy and often anti-social behaviour near homes.

Increasing amounts of litter around takeaways is also a common cause of complaint.

Licensing in Headingley has come under intense review in recent years and last night Coun James Monaghan (Lib Dem, Headingley) said he wanted to see the views of as many residents as possible taken into account during the latest consultation.

The policy now under review covers issues such as the sale of alcohol and aims to prevent crime and disorder, ensure public safety and protect children from harm.

As well as urging residents to get involved, Coun Monaghan is inviting residents to discuss their concerns at a drop-in session at Headingley community Centre on September 21 from 6.30-8.30pm.

Full details of the revised licensing policy, and ways in which residents can have their say, can be found at www.leeds.gov.uk/lpc. The public discussions will run until October 1.

Coun Monaghan said he was aware how alcohol-fuelled behaviour could impact upon people's lives.

"Licensing has been the subject of much debate in Headingley. Like residents, I am all too aware of how the availability of alcohol and food late at night can impact on people living near by.

"Litter, excess noise and anti-social behaviour are all issues that have been raised in the past. This consultation gives us the chance to see what is currently working for Headingley and what's not. I would encourage residents to get online, read the documents and have their say.

"I've also booked Headingley Community Centre for a meeting on the 21st of September at 6.30pm. I hope it will be a good opportunity for residents to come along and discuss any worries they may have about licensing issues."
