'Resign' callin tax debacle

BOSSES should pay the price for the “debacle” at HM Revenue and Customs which is trying to claw back money from 1.4 million people it undercharged in tax, an MP has urged.

MPs vented their anger at the chaos yesterday as the Government pledged to recover the money “as painlessly as possible”.

Labour’s George Mudie, MP for Leeds East, led the attack as he asked whether MPs could expect “some resignations, some disciplinary action, from the highly-paid chairman, chief executive and board”.

He spoke out as HMRC started sending out nearly six million letters to individuals who inadvertently paid too much or too little income tax. Around 4.3 million are due a rebate but some 1.4 million will have to hand over an average of 1,428 each.

Exchequer Secretary David Gauke played down the chances of people being let off paying.
