The event will take place on Friday at the far right hand-side of Scarborough’s South Beach.

People wishing to participate should arrive between 10.15-10.30am and the record will begin at 11am.

The attempt is being launched as part of the A Coast to Boast About initiative, which aims to make Yorkshire’s beaches the best in Europe.

Launched in partnership with Yorkshire Water, the initiative involves a £110m investment by the firm into its waste water facilities along the coast.

Working alongside local councils, the Environment Agency, the Rural Affairs Forum and Welcome To Yorkshire, the goal is to ensure that the bathing waters at Yorkshire’s coastal resorts don’t just meet the new bathing water standards which come into effect from 2015, but achieve the highest ‘Excellent’ standard, making them some of the best anywhere in Europe.

Yorkshire Water has been working in Scarborough since March and is spending £50m in the town alone to improve the bathing conditions.

Steve Pace, bathing water manager at Yorkshire Water said: “We are investing £110m along the Yorkshire Coast to help break records with our bathing waters.

“This Coast to Boast About event is about giving our customers the chance to be part of their very own record-breaking attempt, whilst also enabling them to come down to the beach to find out more about the work we, and our partners are doing.”
