Resort homes plan could help low paid and bring in jobs

Some 170 homes could be built in Whitby, which is desperately short of affordable housing, under a scheme by David Wilson Homes – part of the Barratt Group – to develop farmland south of the existing Barratt estate off Larpool Lane.

The builder wants to use more than 15 acres of green field land to build a mix of new houses, ranging from one to five bedrooms, many of them affordable properties.

Bosses say the development would create 255 jobs and indirectly generate 765 jobs for Whitby and the borough.

Although the site is outside Whitby's permitted development limits, Scarborough Council has already earmarked the land for new housing over the next five years.

Developers say the scheme will provide affordable homes and jobs, boost spending, and also generate money for local schools as part of the planning process, as well as other economic and social benefits.

Peter Morris, development director at David Wilson Yorkshire East, said: "This is a unique opportunity to provide high quality homes in Whitby which will benefit first-time buyers, those in affordable housing need and home owners wanting to move up the property ladder.

"At present, there is a shortage of affordable housing in the Whitby area and our aim is to provide homes that suit the needs of the buyers in this locality."
