Resort plans third day-long event for military veterans

MORE than 10,000 visitors are due to descend on Yorkshire’s most popular seaside resort this summer to pay homage to the nation’s armed forces.

The third annual Armed Forces Day will be held in Scarborough on Saturday June 25, and will feature a wide range of events in tribute to the work of the military.

The programme of displays and entertainment is still being finalised but is expected to include an aeronautical display by the renowned Blades team, who are all ex-Red Arrows pilots.

There will also be a 15-minute display of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster bomber as well as a veterans’ parade along the seafront.

This year’s event is being hosted and organised by Scarborough Borough Council, in partnership with the Heroes Welcome initiative.

The initiative can be used by those serving in the RAF, Army and Navy as well as veterans, to benefit from a discount scheme at hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

Local authority project officer Rowena Marsden said: “The spectacle of last year’s Armed Forces Day in Scarborough and the support from people in the town and further afield is spurring us on to make this year’s event just as eye-catching.

“The parade of 300 serving soldiers last year showed the high esteem our Armed Forces are held in and we are eager to reflect that in the displays we are arranging this year.”

The South Bay Traders’ Association, the Royal British Legion, SSAFA Forces Help and the RNLI are also helping to organise this year’s event.
