Resort railway celebrates record year

It has been all aboard Scarborough's North Bay Railway, with a record 200,000 passengers taking a ride last year.

The surge in passenger numbers show a 25 per cent rise on the year before and an 80 per cent increase since 2006.

The North Bay Railway's general manager, Lesley Humphreys, said, "We are delighted to have achieved this landmark.

"It shows that the railway has become a year round attraction.

"We are carrying more passengers than before because we are there when people want to travel. We know they will come and have a ride on the railway and then visit other parts of the town which is good for us and for the whole of Scarborough."

Due to the surge in passenger numbers, eight full-time staff are now employed on the railway all year round.

The popular tourist attraction has been operating since 1931, running for around three quarters of a mile from Peasholm Park to Scalby Mills station, offering beautiful views of Scarborough's North Bay.
