Resort's whalebone arch in need of new home

The bones, acquired in 1963 by Whitby Rural District Council as a gift from a Norwegian Shipping Company, had become so weathered by the late 1990s they had to be taken down.

In 2002, after a worldwide appeal, the council acquired a new set of jaw bones from one of its twin towns – Barrow in Alaska for a

replacement 19ft arch on the West Cliff.

Meanwhile, the old bones were donated to Whitby Archives but had to be taken off display with the closure of the premises last year.

Now Scarborough Council wants an organisation or individual to become the new custodians of the bones which came from a 113 ton fin whale.
