Restaurant to appeal over black tiles

A RESTAURANT’s owners have decided to appeal against an order from Calderdale Council that it must remove dozens of distinctive jet black tiles cladding the front of the business.

Last December the planning committee voted to refuse retrospective planning permission for the tiles on the front of Ziggy’s Spice House in Carlton Street, Halifax. Officers and councillors say they are unhappy with the tiles as they are not in harmony with a conservation area.

The tiles had been put up to try to improve the appearance of the building. Saghir Hussain, of Ziggy’s, says he did not realise planning permission was required and had merely intended to give the building a more upmarket feel.

But the deputy leader of Calderdale Council, Tim Swift, (Lab, Town), said: “People don’t think it is in keeping with the area and it’s not – it is a conservation area. I am a bit surprised he has appealed.”

His wife Coun Megan Swift, (Lab, Town) added: “I think they ought to be taken down. People have been going mad about them.

“They might look good somewhere else but not there.”
