Restaurant fined £5,000 after raid

Three Bangladeshi men were found working illegally when the Raj Pavilion was raided by the UK Border Agency last December.

Checks revealed that the restaurant, at 56a and 58 Beverley Road, Hull, had five men living upstairs, most of whom worked in the restaurant.

Three shared a room with only two beds and there was no hot water supply to the hand basins or to one of the shower rooms.

Raj Pavilion has since been taken to court for failing to licence a house in multiple occupation.

It pleaded guilty at Hull Magistrates and was fined £5,000, with costs of £2,019 awarded to Hull Council,

Laura Carr, head of physical regeneration at the local authority, said: “Having a licensing system ensures that properties in multiple occupation are well managed with adequate amenities and fire precautions, and helps protect the health, safety and welfare of all occupants.”

Properties for rent which have three or more floors and are let to five or more tenants must be licensed.
