Restored historic organ to rejoin cathedral

A historic organ in Ripon Cathedral will be returned to its former glory after a £30,000 target has been reached just over a year after the launch of a major appeal to restore it.

A final push saw over £15,000 raised at the cathedral’s Christmas Gift and Food Fair on Saturday and the nine-month restoration work has already been tabled for the beginning of 2013.

Launched by the Ripon Cathedral Development Campaign in the spring of 2010, the Organ Appeal has received huge public support – with a host of people organising a series of fundraising initiatives in a bid to restore the Victorian instrument. Built in 1878, the Harrison and Harrison organ contains more than 3,000 pipes and a large portion of the funds were raised through a pipe sponsorship scheme.
