Retailers to slash prices in bid to entice more shoppers

DRIFFIELD’S hard-pressed high street is to receive a boost with the launch of a price-cutting initiative aimed at attracting shoppers to the town.

Shops, pubs and other businesses will offer “price-busting” deals on a range of products, services and meals every Thursday from March 10.

The Driffield Partnership’s chairman, Councillor Symon Fraser, claimed “Driffield Thursdays” would revitalise the town’s high street, which had been hard hit by the recession, and added: “The initiative is designed to put the ‘oomph’ back into the high street by getting all types of businesses ranging from clothes shops to pubs on board in agreeing to cut their prices or offer special offers, for instance two-for-one meal deals, for one day of the week.

“Even though prices will be lower, businesses will not lose out – on the contrary, business will be brisker as many more residents and visitors to the town will come to see what’s on offer and take advantage of the many outstanding deals.”

The scheme is being led by the town council with East Riding Council, and will co-incide with a weekly market. The Mayor of Driffield, Coun Paul Rounding, said: “The scheme is we believe unique in the UK and we love the fact that Driffield could be seen as a trailblazer in doing something really pro-active to help out our high street by encouraging greater numbers of people to shop there.

“Driffield Thursdays along with the Thursday Market will help to re-invigorate the town and provide some outstanding offers to shoppers in these difficult times.”

Signs will guide shoppers to participating outlets.
