Retired chief on long list for new police tsar role

Former South Yorkshire Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes has been included in Labour’s long list of potential candidates for the election of the county’s first police commissioner.

Mr Hughes, who stood down as the county force’s top officer last October after seven years at the helm, is through to the next stage of the party’s selection process, which is due to be held next month.

Two current South Yorkshire Police Authority members – Rotherham mayor Shaun Wright and Kash Walayat – are among other names understood to be on the list.

The Conservatives are also expected to field a candidate in the election, which will be held on November 15.
