Returning to the wild

Two kingfishers have returned to a Yorkshire nature reserve – to the delight of birdwatchers who feared they had left the area after the harshest winter for almost three decades.

The birds, were spotted at Yorkshire Water's Tophill Low reserve near Driffield. They are believed to be the offspring of two adults that perished in freezing conditions last winter.

Kingfishers had been regular visitors to the reserve, but it appeared that the cold weather and a shortage of food had killed as much as four-fifths of the population.

Meanwhile seal pups that became sick in waters off the east coast were returned to the wild yesterday after being treated by RSPCA staff.

The rescued animals were released off the banks of the River Nene at Sutton Bridge in Lincolnshire.
