Revamp of museum moves a step closer

MANAGERS at a museum dedicated to more than 300 years of history of a Yorkshire regiment have pledged to make the attraction one of the region’s must see destinations following a £1m revamp.

The Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond is planning the overhaul and is expected to re-open in 2014, in the year of the 100th anniversary of World War One.

An Edinburgh-based design team, Studio MB, has been appointed to oversee the make-over, scheduled to begin in September 2013 if a bid for £718,200 from the Heritage Lottery Fund is successful. The remainder of the cash will be raised by the museum.

Its commercial manager, Anita Lee, said: “It is a long and detailed process planning the revamp, but we are delighted to have appointed the design team. We want to make the museum not only a must-see attraction for Yorkshire, but one for the whole country as well.”

The museum’s collection spans 300 years of regimental history and boasts more than 3,750 medals and awards, including Victoria and George Crosses.

The Green Howards regiment was first raised in November 1688 for service under William, Prince of Orange.
