Revamp on way for east side of historic seaside town

major plans are being drawn up to regenerate the historic east side of Whitby in a bid to boost the area for residents of the seaside town.

The plan, which has been backed by Scarborough Borough Council’s northern area committee, will set out key issues in the area, long term solutions to problems and actions to improve east Whitby, which boasts the resort’s famous abbey.

The development of the scheme is being led by the borough council and Groundwork, a charity which works with communities to make positive changes to their neighbourhoods.

Organisations including North Yorkshire Police, the Youth Service, the Children’s Centre, Yorkshire Coast Homes and Seachange are also involved and will be working with residents to develop and implement the plan.

Tom Mutton, programme manager for Groundwork, said: “The first stage is to talk to local residents about how they feel about the area, the problems they face and the improvements they would like to see. Changes might include improvements to green spaces, improved community facilities, better play areas or improved lighting. We then need to work together with organisations and potential funders so we can make sure the most important changes are delivered.”

Coun Sandra Turner, the chairman of the new working group set up to develop the plan, added: “This is an exciting time for east Whitby and over the coming months we want to talk to as many local people as possible and to encourage residents and organisations to work together, to help deliver the improvements that residents want to see.”
