Revised plan for food hall wins over objectors

A NEW "top-end" food hall, bar and restaurant along with a development of 14 homes is now set to be built at the junction of Ecclesall Road South and Psalter Lane in Sheffield, after unanimously being given the go-ahead by councillors yesterday.

Last year an application from Gilder Group to convert its former Volkswagen car dealership into a supermarket and 16 homes was refused after a barrage of objections from neighbours in Banner Cross, who objected mainly on the grounds of potential traffic problems.

However, the revised scheme – which will involve keeping the 1950s showroom building and converting it into an "traditional-style" farm shop with a bar above – was approved by members of Sheffield Council's planning board yesterday.

Pete Sutherland, development director at Gilder Group, said he was "delighted" with the board's decision and work was scheduled to get underway in the new year.

He said: "We've worked closely with councillors, planning officers and, most importantly, local residents. It was felt that the scheme had great merit and everybody seems very happy.

"We're going to be making something top end, an English-style food hall and restaurant selling home-grown produce from local farms. This will really be something unique in the area."

In their submission to the council regarding the latest application, Banner Cross Neighbourhood Group said the new plans were a "great improvement."

A spokesman for the group said: "While some of our members would prefer to see a different use for the site, most notably as a wholly residential development, we acknowledge that the current application is a major step forward from what was presented previously."

Mr Sutherland added: "The new plans are much reduced, much more thought-through, and we'll be using the current buildings on the site which is far better from a sustainability point of view."
