Rhinos’ rout

NEARLY 120 years after their acrimonious split, the two codes of rugby were again in competition with each other over the weekend – and there is little doubt which one came off the better.

There was something of the inevitable about England’s ignominious exit from the World Cup at the hands of France following a lacklustre campaign which was long on off-field controversy but significantly short on leadership and direction on the pitch. Few should be surprised by this, given the disarray within the Rugby Football Union which has been paralysed by in-fighting for months.

In stark contrast was the performance of Leeds Rhinos in winning rugby league’s Grand Final with a stunning comeback to beat St Helens. The perseverance of the Rhinos in overcoming setback after setback this season before clinching last-minute triumph has added yet more drama and tension to a Super League season already heavily steeped in both.

Of course, it cannot be claimed that all is perfect in the world of rugby league either. But on the evidence of this weekend, it is still only too clear which code represents the professionals and which the amateurs.
