Ribbon to be cut at path for pupils

A new path which gives schoolchildren an alternative to walking alongside the A63 to school will be officially opened tomorrow.

Chairman of East Riding Council, Coun Kay West, will cut the ribbon on the new cycle/foot path which will be used by South Hunsley Academy pupils.

The path takes pupils away from the main road via an access onto land donated by St Anne’s Community Special School, in Welton.

The opening marks the end of a long-running campaign to improve pedestrian safety.

Ward member Coun Julie Abraham said: “I am so pleased that years of highlighting the potential danger of having up to 100 young people walking unprotected alongside, what is effectively a motorway, have paid off. Local parents are extremely grateful to both the local authority and the Highways Agency for finding the funding for the scheme at a time when they know budgets are very tight.”

The path is used by scores of children from villages to the south of the school, which is attended by almost 2,000 pupils.

As well as the ribbon cutting, there will be various activities to promote cycling provided by Get-Cycling of York.
