Ride to raise awareness of autism

THREE mothers from Sheffield are cycling 360km across three countries to raise £4,000 for the National Autistic Society (NAS).

Deborah Woodhouse, 50, Lynn Strafford, 37, and Renuka Russell, 45, who each have a child with autism, are starting their three-day adventure cycling from London to Brussels on June 14.

The three friends are taking on the challenge to raise awareness of autism. There are approximately 5,500 people in Sheffield living with autism, which affects how a person communicates, and relates, to other people.

The mums are already well on their way to reaching their fundraising target, following donations from Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and David Blunkett, MP for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.

Deborah said: “When my son was first diagnosed with autism when he was six years old, I felt completely lost. Then I came across a specialist help course run by the NAS which changed everything. For the first time I was able to understand my son and felt I could meet his needs. He’s now 14 and doing really well at a brilliant mainstream school.”

Deborah, Lynn and Renuka will be waved off at Sheffield Midland Train Station at 10.45am on June 13.
