Rifles to receive freedom of town

The streets of Dewsbury will feel the impact of the feet of 220 soldiers tomorrow as they celebrate 3rd Battalion The Rifles receiving the freedom of the town from Kirklees Council.

The parade will be led by the Rifles Waterloo Band and followed by soldiers from 3rd Battalion The Rifles, and the 5th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, as well as Army cadets and officials from the Rifles’ Regimental Association.

The parade will begin on Wakefield Old Road in Dewsbury at 11am. The procession will then turn left onto Longcauseway for a short ceremony in the Memorial Gardens before continuing onto Market Place.

At 11.35am the soldiers will return to Longcauseway and march to Dewsbury Town Hall where the Lord Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Eric Firth, will take the salute.

Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Maconochie, the commanding officer of 3 Rifles said yesterday the regiment cherished its links with the town: “The historic links between 3rd Battalion The Rifles, and the town of Dewsbury mean a great deal to us and we are both humbled and proud to be able to mark them with a freedom parade through the town centre.”
