The right type of gift

Mr Hopkins, a former Channel 4 Secret Millionaire and founder of Joblink Solutions, handed the lead type to Ian Massey of the university’s department of Art, Design & Architecture. The chest, from the 1940s, was given to Mr Hopkins 15 years ago by his former boss, businesswoman Judith Donovan,

“Type chests are a rare commodity and becoming increasingly scarce,” said Mr Hopkins.

“I felt that it was time to pass it on to a place where it heritage and importance on the evolution of bringing print to the masses is appreciated.”

Students not familiar with the pre-digital area often find the lead type used in older printing a fascinating thing to study.
