Rip tides warning after sea rescue

LIFEGUARDS have warned visitors to Yorkshire’s coastal resorts to be wary of dangerous rip tides amid concerns bathers could be swept out to sea.

The warning comes after a father and his son had to be rescued from Scarborough’s North Bay over the bank holiday weekend, prompting concerns that a tragedy could happen over the busy summer period. Alex Barthe, a senior RNLI Lifeguard at North Bay who was involved in the rescue, said: “We always advise people to swim at a lifeguarded beach and we very pleased that we were on scene and that we were able to help.

“To avoid getting caught in a rip current, people should always swim between the red and yellow flags, as they will be positioned away from any dangers. If you do get caught, just relax and keep your head up and raise one arm to signal for assistance.”

The rescue happened after the father and son had got into difficulty whilst bodyboarding on Saturday - the opening day of the RNLI charity’s seasonal summer beach safety patrols.

The lifeguards brought them safely back to shore after using paddleboards during the rescue.
