River search as flood waters fall

Police underwater search teams yesterday helped search for missing man Chris Baker in York.

The 29-year-old, of Albemarle Road, disappeared in unusual circumstances five days before Christmas but searches have been hampered by high river levels.

Chief Insp Mike Walker, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “We have been searching for Chris for over a week now but our efforts have been held back by the flood waters in and around the River Ouse.”

He appealed for anyone with any information to get in touch.

Mr Baker, an accountant, was driving to work when he suddenly abandoned his grey Renault Megane on Skeldergate Bridge in York city centre at 7.15am on December 20. He then gestured to a woman in the car behind him before jumping over the wall of Skeldergate Bridge into Tower Gardens, on the banks of the River Ouse. He has not been seen since.

Call police on 101.
