Road chiefs seek ideas to run with

Suggestions on how to improve one of Sheffield’s most congested routes are still being accepted by transport bosses, but the deadline for ideas falls next week.

Officers at Sheffield Council and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive are currently working on a so-called Smart Route project for Ecclesall Road, which is a hotspot for traffic jams.

It is hoped that specific problems can be tackled by opening the process up to public consultation, as well as giving experts a wider knowledge of the major causes of congestion.

The consultation closes next Monday and SYPTE said it was hoped that more people would get involved to help shape the improvements.

A spokesman said: “In March and this month, local residents, businesses, commuters and visitors to the area have been giving their feedback on the proposed changes as part of the Ecclesall Road Smart Route.

Proposals aim to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, while encouraging some car users to consider other options.”
