Road closed as town's gateway improved

A MAIN street in Doncaster town centre is set to be closed on Sunday while some underground toilets that closed more than two decades ago are filled in.

Doncaster Council has decided to fill in the toilets in West Laith Gate – which are between the Halifax bank and Burger King – to save the time and money spent on their upkeep.

A council spokesman said: "By filling in these redundant toilets, they will no longer be classified as a structure and need maintaining by the council.

"Access to the rooftop car park from West Laith Gate will be closed for the day. Temporary road signs will direct vehicles to the Frenchgate multi-storey car park via the alternative entrance in Church View and Greyfriars Road.

"The one-day road closure will allow trial holes to be excavated in the road, followed by coring through into the former toilets roof."

From next Monday West Laith Gate will be reopened while the toilets are filled with foam concrete and then capped off. On the following Sunday, October 10, month-long works will then begin on the footpath and road surface

Peter Dale, Doncaster Council's director of development, said: "The introduction of Yorkstone paving and granite setts will enhance the look and feel of the area and forms an extension to the town centre.

"This will improve the gateway into the town centre from the railway station."

Major roadworks are also now underway at the roundabout which links the A1M with the A630 in Warmsworth, Doncaster.

The month-long roadworks involve replacing the worn-out surface of the A630 and, as a result, a long stretch of the road is currently closed on Monday to Thursday nights from 7pm to 6am.
