Road closed by wall collapse to reopen in the New Year

REPAIRS to a wall which collapsed outside a Sheffield secondary school, undermining a busy road and causing it to be closed, have been delayed by windy and wintry weather.

Glossop Road was originally meant to be re-opened by Christmas, after a 10ft section of stone wall outside King Edward VII upper school collapsed in October, taking a large area of pavement with it.

The school is currently undergoing £22m of construction work as part of the Building Schools for the Future scheme.

A spokesman for Sheffield Council said that – depending on the weather – the road should now re-open on Monday, January 16.

They added that “additional unforeseen utility works” also led to the works being delayed.

Daniel Ladbury, who is leading the project at Sheffield Council, said: “The original target for re-opening the road was by Christmas, but this was always dependent upon the weather and the outcome of the investigations. First and foremost we can not open a road that is not safe.

“The road will remain closed into the new year. We apologise for the inconvenience caused to motorists, residents and businesses alike but I would like to assure people that we are doing everything we can to reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so. I’m sure everyone can understand that safety has to be our first priority here.”

Glossop Road is currently closed between College Street and Newbould Lane.

All businesses are open as usual. The parking scheme that has been offered to traders has been extended until the road is re-opened.
