Road decision delayed by spending review

CALLS were made yesterday for a long-term vision to ensure that as much as £500m really is spent improving North Yorkshire's main road to the coast.

The campaign to upgrade the A64 between York and Scarborough with 35-miles of dual carriageway was raised in the House of Commons.

The MP for Thirsk and Malton, Anne McIntosh, tabled a question during the Department for Transport's question time to establish the Government's plans for the long-awaited scheme.

While Transport Minister Mike Penning refused to make any firm commitment to the upgrade before the autumn spending review, he confirmed he will "look at measures as they are presented".

Miss McIntosh said seaside regeneration was being threatened by poor transport links.
