Road improvements set to create jobs

A PROJECT which will overhaul every street in Sheffield at a cost of £2bn is set to create more than 200 jobs, it has been revealed.

Companies in the city are being lined up to supply lampposts and bins which will be used for the city’s new street furniture, as part of the 25-year “Streets Ahead” scheme, which has just got under way.

A new rail terminal will also be built in Tinsley as the distribution base for stone, gravel, tar and hardcore which will be used to renew Sheffield’s roads.

Over the next five years, contractor Amey will revamp the roads and pavements, starting this month in Shiregreen. Then, the streets will be maintained at that same standard for the remaining 20 years of the contract.

Steve Robinson, from Sheffield Council, said: “Streets Ahead will be good news for the economy, bringing extra work for supply firms, which could create more than 200 jobs.”
