Road safety on curriculum for pupils

PUPILS in North Yorkshire’s secondary schools are among the first in the country to have road safety introduced on to their curriculum.

North Yorkshire County Council has launched the new elements to secondary education after introducing road safety lessons in primary schools.

The council, which is the highways authority for England’s largest county and oversees a network of rural roads linking sparsely populated areas, believes that road safety education is a key issue.

Children in North Yorkshire will now be taught road safety awareness from the age of three.

Road safety education packs have been sent out to North Yorkshire’s secondary schools during this term to incorporate learning programmes, lesson plans and projects into the timetable for the next academic year.

The initiative is already underway in North Yorkshire’s primary schools and the county council has appointed a road safety curriculum adviser to liaise with teachers.

The Government recently published a report that stressed road user education should be part of every child’s education.
