Road safety drive targets mobile phones

COUNCIL road safety chiefs claim “Mobile Oblivion”, a case of being oblivious to the risks of using a mobile phone at the wheel, appears to be reaching epidemic proportions.

Calderdale Council says that well over one in 10 drivers can be seen using their mobiles at the wheel.

In 2006, in counts at the roadside, the behaviour was seen to affect five out of every 100 drivers, by 2010 in a repeat of the same counts, that had increased to 12 out of every 100 drivers displaying the same behaviour.

Now the road safety team is to launch a borough-wide road safety campaign aimed at reducing the numbers of people putting themselves and others at risk through the use of mobile phones.

The campaign focuses on the consequences of using a hand- held phone and will be appearing on buses, petrol pumps and bus shelters across the district.
