ROMANIAN police are heading to Yorkshire to learn about latest techniques for road policing.

A team of five Romanian officers will work alongside colleagues from Humberside Police this month as part of pan-European exchange project known as TISPOL.

The three-year project began in 2008 and sees officers from Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Spain working with other European forces to improve traffic policing.

The Romanians will spend two days with colleagues from Humberside Police, which is described as having an “excellent” record in road safety and casualty reduction.

They will spend time with the roads crime section and tactical pursuit and containment training unit.

Inspector Graham Johnstone, of Humberside Police, said: “This is an excellent opportunity to link in with our counterparts in Europe and be able to have a direct impact in saving more lives on all of Europe’s roads.

“Much of the project centres around how we can help our Eastern European colleagues to be more effective and pro-active in their approaches to vehicles on their roads, especially with Europe’s relaxed border controls in terms of travel and trade.

“We have many excellent facets of roads policing in Humberside and indeed across the region, and the intention is to allow our colleagues from Romania to experience what we are able to do in terms of education, enforcement and engineering and to take this back to Romania and pass on these policing skills back home.”

Ian Hamill, TISPOL general secretary, added: “Exchanges offer the opportunity for police officers to visit and observe activities taking place which have been found to improve road safety in a particular country.”
