Roads to be closed for hero soldier’s funeral

ROADS will be closed in Darton, near Barnsley next Tuesday morning to allow the funeral cortege of a soldier killed in Afghanistan to pass through the village.

Territorial army volunteer Private Matthew Thornton, 28, was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Helmand province on Wednesday, November 9.

Private Thornton, from the 4th Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment, lived in Darton, and his family and friends will gather at the village’s All Saints Church at 11am.

Council spokesman Bob Williams said: “Barnsley Council apologises for these closures and any inconvenience caused.”

He added: “Where possible, drivers are asked to avoid the area and, in the circumstances, their patience and understanding would be very much appreciated.”

Roads including Bridge Street, Station Road and Church Street will be closed between 10.30am and 11.15am.
