Roads to be closed for troops' parade

MOTORISTS were warned yesterday that three roads are to be closed in the centre of Ripon next week for a military parade through the city.

Crowds are expected to be out in force to welcome home the 4th Regiment Royal Artillery – the Yorkshire Gunners – from Afghanistan on Thursday.

Traffic will be barred from Minster Road, Bedern Bank and Kirkgate between 2.30pm and 5.15pm for a parade and memorial and thanksgiving service to mark the end of the tour.

Vehicles being used by the emergency services are exempt. Pedestrian access to premises will be maintained at all times and vehicular access to premises will be maintained whenever possible.

Alternative routes will be signed for the duration of the parade. Rolling road closures will be implemented and removed as required.

The regiment, which was formed as 5th Regiment Royal Horse Artillery in 1939, is based at the Marne Barracks next to the A1.

Hundreds of soldiers marched through Ripon last month to mark their return from a tour in Afghanistan which saw four men from the regiment killed.

Troops from 21 Engineer Regiment based at the city's Claro Barracks took part in the homecoming parade.
