Roads closed for EDL rally over axed Sheffield mosque bid

ROADS will be closed in north Sheffield on Saturday as the far-right English Defence League holds a demonstration against now-abandoned plans to convert a pub into a mosque.

Its members are due to gather for the rally at the Pheasant pub in the Parson Cross area of the city from 10am.

The protest, at Sheffield Lane Top, will begin at 1pm.

A counter demonstration is expected to be held by the group One Sheffield Many Cultures.

South Yorkshire Police said Buchanan Road and Elm Lane would be shut between 1pm and 4pm, along with Hatfield House Lane, from its junction with Barnsley Road and Shiregreen Lane.

There could also be disruption to Stubbins Lane, Barnsley Road and Deerlands Avenue.

The plans to convert the mosque by the Firth Park Cultural Centre have been dropped – apparently owing to the too-high sale price – but the demonstration is going ahead as planned.
