Roadworks begin to improve traffic flow at busy roundabout

ROADWORKS have begun to improve the flow of traffic at Meadowhead roundabout in Sheffield.

The first phase of the work involves filling in the Dyche Lane subway and replacing it with a surface-level crossing, providing a cycle route from Chesterfield Road South to Bochum Parkway and reshaping the roundabout.

During the half term week from Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 21, when it is anticipated there will be less traffic on the roads, Dyche Lane will be closed at its junction with Bochum Parkway. A diversionary route will be signposted.

The roadworks are beginning after Sheffield Council carried out a consultation with drivers in the area. More than 1,000 responses were received and a council spokesman said these indicated a "high level of general support for the scheme".

Councillor Ian Auckland, cabinet member for sustainable transport and streetscene at Sheffield Council, said: "The proposals aim to tackle congestion for all road users, improve bus journey times and reliability and improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists around the roundabout.

"We had a great response when consulting on the proposals and the majority of people were in favour of the changes.

"We're now using this feedback to reshape some of the proposals to phase two so that they fit with what local people want.

"We'll be consulting on the revised plans soon and I'd encourage as many people as possible to have their say so that we can get the improvements right for the majority of people in the area."

Plans for the second phase of the roadworks include filling in the Meadowhead subway and providing a new signal-controlled junction at Greenhill Main Road and Greenhill Avenue. When these proposals are finalised members of the public will be asked for their views.

Information will be sent out to all properties near to the proposed improvements along with a response form, which people can send back to the council.

Currently around 51,000 vehicles use the Meadowhead roundabout every day. Delays are caused by issues such as narrow lanes and the shape of the roundabout, while residents have also highlighted concerns about the safety of the pedestrian subways.
