Robber starved himself to death

An armed robber starved himself to death in prison during a protest against his conviction more than 20 years earlier, an inquest heard yesterday.

Ronnie Easterbrook was only 6st 3lb when he died at Gartree prison in Leicestershire after six months on hunger strike.

The 77-year-old was jailed in 1988 for shooting a police officer during a botched armed robbery in Woolwich, London.

The inquest heard that Easterbrook claimed he was a political prisoner.
