Robbery alert despite record for detections

POLICE in Hull are urging people to avoid being alone in secluded areas as part of a drive to reduce robberies in the city.

The warning comes despite Hull's dedicated robbery team recording its highest detection rate.

Figures released by Humberside Police show the number of robberies fell by 17 per cent, with 59 fewer incidents, between April 2009 and March this year.

Sergeant Darren Rose said: "As a team we are proud of the work we are doing to bringing robbery offenders to justice and since April 1, 2010 detection rate for robbery in Hull is 57 per cent, which is the highest ever recorded by the team.

"Together with other police teams including scenes of crime officers, the immediate response teams and the neighbourhood policing teams we are offering a quick response, recovering evidence and offering support to victims and ultimately capturing perpetrators.

"The target this year is to try and continue to reduce incidents of robbery across Hull, but for this we need the public's help by listening to advice which will help reduce the chances of being targeted by a small number of offenders.

"Therefore I would urge the public to cut possible risk by planning routes to avoid being alone in quiet secluded places, instead choose busier, well lit streets over less used short cuts.

"Also try not to display desirable items or cash and is if possible try to minimise the time you spend using the phone while walking, especially if you have the latest, most desirable make or model."

Police are also encouraging people to register high value electrical goods at www.immobilise.com.

Sgt Rose added: "Together the people of Hull and police can eliminate street robbery through both intervention and prevention."
