Rockfall shuts M62 feeder road in West Yorkshire

A ROCK fall has closed of part of the Elland by-pass near the M62 in West Yorkshire this morning.

The A629 is shut between the Elland slip road and the junction with the M62 until later today.

A diversion has been set up, with drivers having to leave the by-pass at the Elland slip road and use the old Huddersfield Road. The by-pass remains open for drivers coming from the motorway towards Halifax.

The uphill section of the road will remain closed while structural engineers assess the site of the rock fall.

Calderdale Council said its engineers and contractors were assessing the area and working to make it safe.

A spokesman said: “As there are no means to prevent further rock fall, safety measures have been constructed to stop more rocks falling onto the road and footpath.

“A rock trap has been constructed in the highway verge to trap any more boulders which may fall. The footpath running behind the highway verge will be diverted to ensure the safety of pedestrians.”

The council said it was hoped to re-open the road by 4pm today.
