Roll on summer, say drivers hit by roundabout misery

PROBLEMS on a busy roundabout which piled on the misery for motorists during the worst of the icy weather will not be properly rectified until next summer, according to council highways bosses.

Commuters were caught up in massive tailbacks and suffered huge delays earlier this week on both the A630 Sheffield Parkway, Rotherway and the M1 where the three roads meet at junction 33 of the motorway. The jams were caused by a long-standing issue which has caused the road to break up several times on one of the bridges on the roundabout which passes over the M1.

Officers from Rotherham Council admitted it had been an issue for months and had been temporarily repaired several times, but said it broke up once again as a result of heavy snow and freezing temperatures.

A council spokesman said the ultimate responsibility lay with the Highways Agency and added: "Engineers from Rotherham Council have made repairs previously to keep the highway safe for road users.

"It is hoped that the Highways Agency, which is responsible for the bridge surface, will undertake the substantial repairs to the waterproof membrane and the carriageway in the summer, when the weather conditions are more conducive to this type of repair."
