Romanian held over sex attack at Whitby

A ROMANIAN man has been arrested and questioned by police in connection with a sex attack in Yorkshire after a nationwide hunt tracked him down to Scotland.

Detectives from North Yorkshire Police last week named Gheorghe Mighali, 27, of no fixed address, as a suspect in 
the attack on a teenage girl which happened in Whitby.

Details were circulated to police forces across the UK and a force spokesman confirmed yesterday that Mighali had been arrested in Scotland, although the exact location has not been disclosed.

Mighali was detained on Saturday afternoon and was brought to Scarborough police station for questioning before he was released on bail while inquiries continue.

The sex attack on the victim, who is aged in her mid-teens, happened in the Stakesby Road and Station Avenue area of Whitby between 9pm and 10pm on Saturday, March 9.

Mighali is known to have visited the Whitby area within days of the attack, and was also seen in Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Newcastle in the days leading up to his arrest.
