The England and Manchester United forward split from JGG when his agent, Paul Stretford, left the company and took his two star clients with him in 2008.

JGG owns Proactive Sports Management, the company founded by Mr Stretford, which previously represented the young stars.

The lawsuit will see Rooney and his wife give evidence in a court case that is expected to last three weeks.

Last night, a spokesman for the couple said: "Neither Proactive Sports Management nor the James Grant Group has provided any services for Wayne or Coleen or their companies for the past 15 months.

"During that time the management of all Wayne's and Coleen's commercial activities has been handled by their long-time business manager Paul Stretford.

"Paul has developed a very close working relationship with Wayne, having represented him since he was 17.

"Both Wayne and Coleen regard the claims being made against them as exploitative and financially driven.

"They regard the defence of these claims as a matter of principle."

The hearing begins at 10am today at Manchester Mercantile Court.
