Roses mark Duke's demise

Chairman of the Yorkshire branch of the Richard III Society Angela Moreton, with society members, laid a bouquet of white roses at the monument on Manygates Lane in Wakefield that marks the spot where the Duke of York fell in 1460 during the War of the Roses.

Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, who was killed on December 30 1460, was the father of two Yorkist kings Edward IV and Richard III.

Next summer Wakefield Historical Society will commemorate the 550th anniversary of the Battle of Wakefield with an eight-day programme of visits, talks, and services following the route taken by the funeral procession when, in July 1476, Richard’s body was exhumed from Pontefract and taken for reburial at the great church of the York dynasty at Fotheringhay.

Details of the events, and the cost of taking part are available from Pam Judkins via email at [email protected]
