Round-world yacht puts Yorkshire on map

ENGLAND’S only entry in the world’s longest yacht race will be flying the flag for Yorkshire when the starting cannon is fired tomorrow.

Welcome to Yorkshire is among a 10-strong fleet of 68ft vessels that will embark on an epic 40,000-mile journey when the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race gets under way. Led by a professional skipper, the first-leg crew on Welcome to Yorkshire includes amateur sailors from all walks of life, including a banker, a carer, a farmer and a venture capitalist. The race, which follows a parade of sail accompanied by the Royal Navy’s helicopter carrier, HMS Illustrious, starts in the iconic sailing grounds of the Solent at 4.30pm.
